Bears send clear warning to Kyler Gordon amid injury uncertainty

The Chicago Bears might not see Kyler Gordon play another game with the team. General Manager Ryan Poles made it clear that the ball is in his court, and that it comes down to the confidence Gordon has in being able to push through his injury recovery.

Poles noted that he hopes Gordon will play for the Bears this season, but said it is on him, 

“He’s going to have to continue to work hard and get back to playing football,” said Poles. 

Poles made it clear that the team anticipated him to be back by now. However, different people return from injuries on different timelines. Poles emphasized that it will come down to confidence with Gordon. 

“When people come back from injuries, there are different things that happen; some people return fast, some people return slow,” Poles said on the situation. “It's really a timing thing and a healing thing and a confidence thing.”

Poles indicated that Gordon needs to push through some of the discomfort of returning from injury. Without that, it will be hard for him to be cleared. 

Of course, if Gordon is saying he does not feel healthy, there is a question of how much he wants to return to the field. He was not drafted by head coach Ben Johnson or defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. 

He could be clashing with the coaches and not returning quite as fast as a result. Gordon only suited up for the Bears for one game last year, and Johnson expressed frustration. Now, he has hardly returned this offseason despite the team saying they feel he is ready to return whenever he is ready.

The Bears are likely to move on from Gordon after this year. He signed a three-year, $40M extension that just kicked in. The team would have eaten $17.5M if they cut him this season. Meanwhile, they can save $8M if they move on from him this year. 

So, the team will likely wait for him to return this year, but act as if they are going to need to replace him all season. Then, the hope is that whoever started the year prior can hold onto that spot. 

It will likely come down to either Malik Muhammad or Cam Lewis. Muhammad played on the outside last year, and Lewis was signed to play safety. However, both have shown experience and have looked good in the preseason playing in the slot. 

Both are likely to get more work in the slot this year than Gordon.
