Bears Reuniting With Surprise Pass-Catcher Before Week 6 Kickoff
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Bears are in London this week preparing to play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. This is a prime opportunity for the Bears to win their third-straight game before heading into the Week 7 bye.
Chicago is coming off an impressive 36-10 blowout win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 5.
The Bears have made a few notable roster moves this week, including ruling out veteran safety Jaquan Brisker with a concussion. However, Chicago also made a small signing to the practice squad, re-signing a familiar face from training camp.
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears signed veteran tight end Tommy Sweeney to the practice squad.
Chicago released Sweeney ahead of the 53-man roster deadline in August after being signed by the team in May. The 29-year-old pass catcher played well in the preseason, recording nine receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
Sweeney had a visit/workout early last month with the Cleveland Browns before re-signing with the Bears.
Before signing with the Bears earlier this year, Sweeney spent the 2023 season with the New York Giants. Despite being on their active roster, he never played a single snap with the Giants. The 6-foot-5 tight end was originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.
Sweeney spent three seasons in Buffalo, posting 18 receptions (26 targets) for 165 yards and a touchdown. His lone touchdown was scored during the 2021 season after being placed on the reserve/COVID list in 2020.
