The Chicago Bears appear to believe that they have a future NFL starting quarterback in Tyson Bagent. While the team thought that he would have value on a trade market and they would be able to send him to a team, that did happen. That is because Bagent is still just a UDFA with limited experience.
Does Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent have an NFL future as a starter?
While the Bears are high on Bagent, the odds are that he will just maintain his career as a high end back end. Since 2000, there have 16 quarterbacks that were UDFAs, and were able to get at least 100 pass attempts early in their career. So, despite being undrafted they were able to climb the depth chart quickly and get on the field. One of the other names was rookie Brady Cook, so aside from Cook, and Bagen there are 14 players that had a similar start to their career as Bagent.
While the majority of them turned into solid backups, none of them turned into capable starters. Tyler Huntley, Kyle Allen, Nick Mullens, Matt McGloin, Case Keenum, Matt Moore, Tim Hassleback, Doug Johnson, and Anthony Wright all maintained carers in the NFL as backups. That nine of the 14 players, which is a high rate.
Tommy DeVito, Devlin Hodges, David Blough, Austin Davis, and Chad Hutchinson did not have careers as backups. DeVito and Hodges were fun stories, while Blough and Davis quickly got into coaching.
Still, while Huntley, Moore and Keenum have playoff starts, they were all due to unexpected twists and turns in the season that led to them starting. The most successful quarterback in this group as far as longevity and career success is most likely Keenum. He started 66 games and led a team to an NFC Championship as a starting quarterback.
What makes the comparison even more fun is that Keenum is the third string quarterback on the Bears roster, behind Bagent. So, if there is anyone for Bagent to learn from, Keenum might be one of the best options.
Still, while the Bears might view his potential ceiling as higher than someone like Keenum, it is fair that other teams see the history of the position for UDFAs and think that while Bagent is likely going to maintain a career as a competent backup, that is likely the best outcome for his career, and making him a starter is not likely.
