Bears Preparing to Make Massive Head Coach Mistake
By Cem Yolbulan
The Chicago Bears are one game away from the end of the most disappointing season of their recent history. Despite significant offseason additions, they took a step back and won fewer games than in 2023. As a result, Matt Eberflus became the first head coach to be fired midseason in Bears history.
Interim head coach Thomas Brown wasn't a panacea to Bears' struggles. They continued their offensive woes and couldn't stop the losing streak that has now extended to ten games.
Naturally, who the next head coach will be is the biggest storyline of Chicago's offseason. According to NFL insider Albert Breer, however, the Bears are making a big search in their search. Reportedly, the Bears ownership wants GM Ryan Poles to make the next hire.
Bears News: GM Ryan Poles to Pick Next Head Coach
This is a big mistake for various reasons. First of all, Poles doesn't have a ton of job security himself. Another losing season in 2025 will make his seat warmer. At that point, it is going to look rather silly to continue with his head coach pick once he is ousted.
Secondly, not only should Poles not be making the hire, but he shouldn't keep his job beyond this season. Ever since becoming the GM in the 2022 offseason, Poles has been one of the most active decision-makers in the league. Trading the first-overall pick to the Carolina Panthers is generally lauded as one of the best trades in recent years. Everything else, however, has been a big question mark.
He may have succeeded in tearing it all down in Chicago but he has certainly not done a good job building a winning roster. In his tenure, the Bears are 14-36 in three seasons. That track record is difficult to justify bringing back, let alone allowing to pick the franchise's next head coach.
