The Chicago Bears haven't made any splash additions this offseason, but that could change after the blockbuster trade that went down on March 17. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Miami Dolphins are trading receiver Jaylen Waddle and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for Denver's 2026 first-round pick, in addition to their 2026 third and fourth-round picks.
This move comes as a surprise but shows that the Dolphins are willing to move off their star players at the right price. And that means Chicago should call up Miami and see what it would take to acquire running back De'Von Achane.
Bears Should Look at Trading for RB De’Von Achane
Back in February, NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported that the Dolphins planned to keep both Waddle and Achane, as the team viewed them as "core players."
"Teams would love for them to trade Jaylen Waddle and De’Von Achane. I’m told now they’re wanting to keep those guys as core players,” Wolfe said.
But with this trade, it's clear that Achane could be moved for the right price, and Chicago would be wise to see what it would take to bring Achane to the Windy City. They have the duo of D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai in the backfield. They found plenty of success with that group, ranking third in rushing offense (144.5) last season, but the idea of adding Achane to the fold would take this offense to another level.
Especially since Swift has just one year remaining on his deal, at $8.8 million. The Bears' front office will have to decide whether to extend Swift or look elsewhere for an RB1. But if they traded for Achane, they would have their star RB of the future.
In 44 career games with the Dolphins, Achane has compiled 3,057 rushing yards, 5.6 yards per carry, and 22 touchdowns on the ground. He is also a weapon as a pass-catcher, logging 172 receptions for 1,277 receiving yards and another 13 receiving touchdowns. Over the last two seasons, Achane has tallied 67-plus receptions and 480-plus receiving yards.
He's a true difference maker and would give the Bears offense another dynamic weapon. At the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, Achane ran a 4.32 40-yard dash, highlighting his blazing speed. The idea of him being in an offense with Ben Johnson calling the shots is intriguing.
And with the Dolphins clearly tearing things down to the studs, Achane can be had for the right price. Less than a month ago, Miami said they wanted to keep Waddle but shipped him out when they got the deal they wanted.
Chicago should make a push to trade for the Texas A&M product. He has one year left on his deal, and that's the case with Swift, as well. The difference is that Achane is a better and younger player than Swift. Of course, it would cost them more to extend Achane, in addition to draft capital, but Chicago has the luxury of having Williams on a rookie deal.
They could find a way to extend Achane, giving the Bears another explosive weapon that could take this unit to another tier.
