The Chicago Bears revamped their wide receiver room this offseason, moving on from DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccheaus, and adding Kalif Raymond and rookie Zavion Thomas. While Rome Odunze and Luther Burden will continue to be the primary targets on the outside, Caleb Williams will have a vastly different receiving corps next season. And it looks like the Bears may not be done adding.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bears have a tryout scheduled for next week with former Steelers WR Scotty Miller. The problem is that he already visited with the Detroit Lions today. Chicago needs to act fast to ensure that their rivals don't end up with the talented playmaker.
Bears Are Competing With the Lions for WR Scotty Miller
The Bears still need to bring more competition at WR to training camp. Thomas was widely considered a reach in the third round, and how ready he will be to contribute right away is unclear. Jahdae Walker showed flashes down the stretch last season, but he is largely unproven. Kalif Raymond has had solid moments in Detroit as a depth option and is a threat in the return game, but he will turn 32 before the season. How much fuel he has left in the tank remains to be seen.
This makes Chicago's depth behind Odunze and Burden questionable compared to last season. Bringing in a competent veteran who has made an impact in different situations, like Miller, should be of interest to the Bears.
Miller spent the last two seasons with the Steelers after following his former head coach, Arthur Smith, to Pittsburgh. He was the fifth receiver on the depth chart there, so his opportunities were limited. He caught nine passes for 62 yards and returned two punts for 34 yards.
The 28-year-old receiver is obviously not the player he was earlier in his career. He was an important part of the Tampa Bay team that won the Super Bowl in 2020. After he suffered a turf toe in 2021 and missed a large portion of the season, Miller never looked the same. Once one of the fastest receivers in the league, he doesn't possess the same level of athleticism anymore, but it may still be worth it for the Bears to bring him in.
The Lions don't have a desperate need for more WR depth after signing Greg Dortch and drafting Kendrick Law in the fifth round to add to the room that already had Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Isaac TeSlaa. Miller's path to a roster spot would be more challenging there, perhaps making it more likely that he ends up with the Bears. Whether that's the case remains to be seen.
