Bears may have quietly solved their Drew Dalman problem with Garrett Bradbury

One of the biggest questions in the offseason is how the Chicago Bears offense will look with a new center. The team made it a priority to sign Drew Dahlman last season, but he surprisingly retired after just one year with the team. 

While they went out and immediately traded for Garrett Bradbury, they also drafted Logan Jones in the second round as a way to hedge their bets. However, all of the early indications out of Bears camp are that Bradbury has picked up right where Dahlman left off.

Cole Kmet was asked about what he saw from Bradbury, and noted that the communication has been the biggest impact on the team. 

“It really has been flawless so far,” said Kmet. “You talk about communication in the walk-throughs that we had and practice; things have been really clear and concise.”

Kmet noted this has been extremely valuable for the early portions of training camp because the team has been able to stay on the same page. However, while this is a great start for Bradbury, it does not eliminate Jones from starting by any stretch. Jones still has time to earn a job as early as Week 1. 

Kmet almost noted that the team had yet to put on the pads. So, while Bradbury was great at communicating and keeping things aligned in theory, he has not had to deal with the physical side of the game. That has always been the drawback for Bradbury, who is undersized. 

The bigger, more physical defensive lineman can beat him up, and that is why he is on his third team in as many years. He was signed because they knew he was able to bring a high-level of communication that the rookie could not. However, when the pads come on, it could be easy to see the difference in physicality between the two players. 

Bradbury still did his job, though. He was able to give Jones the time to catch up on the mental side while he held things down and kept the offense moving. Meanwhile, the offense was able to continue without having to hold things back for the rookie. However, once Jones is ready for the mental side, the competition might really heat up. That is when fans are going to want to watch the center competition.
