When the Chicago Bears first met with the NFL media before the offseason began, they spoke as if it were essentially a formality that Tyson Bagent would get traded this offseason. The team said that they would do right by Bagent to get him a starting opportunity and that he deserved this chance. Now that the 2026 NFL draft is over and Bagent is still on the Bears, there is a question as to whether the Bears were bluffing or if they could still trade him.
Did the Chicago Bears miss their chance to trade Tyson Bagent?
Perhaps the biggest thing that the Bears miscalculated, or the thing that is holding the team back from trading Bagent, is the potential of the quarterback draft for next year. There are supposed to be a lot of intriguing talents, with Arch Manning being the headline name. So, teams are positioning themselves to be in the sweepstakes for Manning next year and not raising the floor by bringing Bagent into the room this year.Â
The Arizona Cardinals drafted Carson Beck high enough that they will roll with him and hope he either turns out or leads them to Manning. Shedeur Sanders will get the same chance with the Cleveland Browns. The Atlanta Falcons will bet on Tua Tagovailoa and not worry if he gets hurt. With New York riding with Geno Smith, there are four teams right here that could have traded for Bagent, but would rather position themselves for next year.
Kyler Murray to the Vikings and Malik Willis to Miami did not help, but the other two teams that may have hurt the Bears were Pittsburgh and Indianapolis.Â
Pittsburgh appears to be waiting for Aaron Rodgers. They did draft Drew Allar in round 3, which might take them away from trading for Bagent, but they are one of the few teams that still could do it. The same can be said with the Colts, who appear ready to move on from Anthony Richardson, but this dry quarterback market has them sitting on their hands as well. Still, with Daniel Jones coming off an ACL injury and Riley Leonard as their only other option, they could still be in the running for Bagent as well. However, their insistence on keeping Richardson and running it back with the room is hurting the Bears chances.Â
Chicago probably saw eight teams with quarterback holes and figured that Bagent would fill one of them. It did not turn their way, though.
