Chicago Bears former running back Matt Forte recently spoke on the Bears’ decision to pursue stadium opportunities in Hammond Indiana rather than Arlington Heights, Illinois. This debate has been ongoing for some time now as the Bears look to enter the 21st century with a new stadium project.
Unfortunately for Bears fans, the organization is going. This decision is one that's been a long time coming, but it’s going to divide the fans nonetheless. In a perfect world, the location that Soldier Field sits would be a perfect expandable location that befits the vision the Bears have. But that's not the reality of the situation.
Matt Forte understands why the Bears are making this move
"I thought that the Indiana thing was not gonna go through, that it was gonna be kind of a posturing move to be able to negotiate. Maybe a better deal in Arlington Heights."Matt Forte
Forte isn't alone in that belief. Since it was announced, the general feeling around the Hammond site was merely as a bargaining chip. Now that the Bears’ Board of Directors has voted on and announced a decision, it all suddenly feels real and at our doorstep. Though many viewed it as leverage, there's a strong possibility that many still won't believe it. The organization already purchased the Arlington location in 2023, making it look the clear long-term solution.
For many fans, particularly of the generations that followed in Halas himself feel that this is a betrayal. It feel a betrayal to the city of Chicago, Halas' legacy, and to the fans that have dedicated their support to the team. Forte mentions the Bears always being in Chicago and how that's always been the case. It's exceedingly difficult for people to change, especially when something is as deeply rooted as this team.
Matt Forte's comments won't change the Bears' plans, but they do illustrate why this decision remains so controversial. The organization may see Hammond as the best path forward, but as long as franchise icons and longtime fans view the move with skepticism, the debate isn't going away anytime soon.
