Bears insider all but shuts down latest Cole Kmet trade speculation

A post-June 1 trade is technically easier, but the Bears still have little reason to move their veteran tight end.

The Chicago Bears saw Myles Garrett and A.J. Brown get traded in recent days. While Cole Kmet does not have the same star power to his name, the team could trade him now that the June 1 deadline has passed.

Chicago Bears could trade Cole Kmet

Kmet is similar to Garrett and Brown in that the structure of his bonuses make him easier to trade now that June 1 has passed. Before June 1, if the team traded Kmet, they would have eat $4M in cap space. However, now that the date has passed, the team would actually save $1.35M in cap space.

The Bears would have to eat $5.4M in cap space next year, but if they planned to move Kmet next offseason that would be the same cap hit. So, by moving on now they could add to the roster or roll the cap hit over and it would not sting as much when they move on next year.

Of coure, that is assuming they plan to move on next year. The cap hits for Kmet are not for a quality second tight end, especially for how much the Bears like to run their two tight end sets. Beyond that, saving a little over $1M in cap space is hardly anything to get excited about, so a team would have to really entice them with a pick.

It is hard to see a team blowing the Bears away with a pick at this stage of the offseason, so even if there is interest from other teams it is hard to see it being worth it for the Bears.

Kmet might be slightly overqualifiied for a number two tight end role, but the Bears are thinner at wide receiver than they were last season. Having a quality second tight end makes that less of an issue. More than that, while the team is excited about Sam Roush and what he can potentially bring to the team moving forward, it is hard to expect a lot from a rookie tight end.

Lastly, if he jumped from the third tight end to the number two, they would be thin at the backend of their depth chart once again. The Bears ran looks with three tight ends enough to need a reliable option there and they would get too thing without Kmet.

The Bears can trade Kmet now, but they still likely will not.
