Bears Gifted Stud Pass Rusher Trade Opportunity After Latest News
The Chicago Bears are happy they turned the page on the 2024 season after another disappointing year.
The Bears have Ben Johnson as their new head coach as he looks to turn things around in the Windy City. This roster has some pieces on both sides of the ball but needs more juice in certain areas. Pass rush is one of those spots, and the Bears may get the perfect opportunity to improve that group.
Cincinnati Bengals EDGE Trey Hendrickson could be someone to keep an eye on. Last year, he requested a trade after failing to agree to an extension with the Bengals. Without a new deal locked in, Hendrickson could be on the move.
Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said, "Has he earned a pay raise and a bump in an extension … he has," Tobin said. "We're cognizant of that, and we will give that to him. But whether we agree on what that looks like is, is what is to be determined."
Trey Hendrickson May Be On the Move This Offseason
Hendrickson has one year left on his current deal that has a $18.6 million cap hit in 2025. That is massively underpaid for an effective pass rusher. The ten highest-paid EDGE rushers in the NFL get at least $22 million annually.
The FAU product is seeking to land a new deal but rightfully so. In 110 career games (81 starts) has registered 220 total tackles, 71 TFLs, and 77 sacks. This past season, he led the NFL in sacks with 17.5.
The Bears could use some help up front. They were 23rd in the league in team sacks (40) and failed to have a player log more than 5.5 sacks on the season.
General manager Ryan Poles has shown he isn't afraid to make a move for a pass rusher. In October 2023, the Bears gave up a second-round pick for Montez Sweat. Just four days after the deal, they gave him a four-year, $98 million extension.
With $62 million projected in cap space per Overthecap.com, Chicago has the assets to give Hendrickson the lucrative extension that he desires. Pairing him with Sweat would give the Bears an electric pass-rushing duo for years to come.
