The Chicago Bears announced that they plan to waive former fifth-round pick Zah Frazier. The decision is a disappointing end to a confusing scenario that left the Bears without getting any sort of value from that pick.Â
The Chicago Bears waive cornerback Zah Frazier
The pick was always a bet on upside, as Frazier had immense physical talent but it did not quite translate onto the field yet. However, this pick did not fail on the field at all, and Frazier never even got onto the field. He was excused early on due to personal reasons. The Bears never gave much explanation, but he did not end up returning to the team at all.Â
When the Bears drafted Malik Muhammad in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL draft, it was a pretty clear indication that the Bears had stopped expecting to get anything from the draft pick they made just a year prior. They took Muhammad to play the same position in a round higher the next year, showing they did not want to miss on this one.Â
Beyond that, the team has Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, and Kyler Gordon as starters. With the rookie Muhammad across from a healthy Terell Smith and Josh Blackwell in the slot, the team has six players set to make the roster without considering Frazier. With Jaylon Jones and Dallis Flowers also on the roster, there was a case to be made that he would struggle to find his way onto the practice squad, especially after missing a full season.
So, the Bears had already moved on in terms of the depth chart; now, they made the transaction official. It is disappointing because we will never know what he could have become in the NFL.
You can say it was a fifth-round pick and the odds of that hitting were low, but interestingly enough, the next cornerback to get drafted was Denzel Burke, who turned into a starter for the Arizona Cardinals. The Bears also could have drafted Jackson Hawes, a solid blocking tight end on the Buffalo Bills, who would have been a great third tight end. Then, they would not have needed to spend a pick on Sam Roush this year. Still, it is a bit of a crap shoot in the fifth round, and the Bears could not have anticipated that personal reasons would have derailed his career so soon.
