First round draft selections have a unique experience coming into the NFL. A first round selection is a valuable thing in the NFL, and naturally many spotlights shine upon those that are selected. Colston Loveland and the Chicago Bears are no different.
With the selection of Sam Roush in the 2026 draft, many heads are turning toward Cole Kmet expecting to see his name on the trade block, but not many eyes are on Loveland's name. That attention has largely centered on what Loveland's rise means for Cole Kmet, but it has also overshadowed just how quickly the young tight end has established himself as a key piece of Chicago's future
Colston Loveland has already shown he can handle the spotlight
Loveland had a slow start to 2025, but by the end of the season, he had not only become the Bears number one in receiving yards, but he had also carved a clear role in the Bears offensive plans. His late-season surge transformed him from a promising rookie into one of the focal points of an offense that continued to lean on him in critical situations.
Johnson employs more deception than your standard NFL offense, frequently running plays that operate with three tight ends on the field. As Caleb Williams and Loveland had more time together, the more their chemistry could be viewed on the field. This is clearly evident in Loveland's target rate.
Chicago football fans are not the only ones that saw those games. The whole NFL world saw what Loveland and Williams were able to do together. With an entire year of film on him containing high and low usage, Loveland will have a tough time rising above expectations in year two.
Even though these defenses now know who Loveland is doesn't mean he can't break out above what's expected of him. The bar was high before, and it's going to get higher and higher the better Loveland does. Whether Loveland clears those expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear. The Bears are no longer hoping he becomes a star. They're expecting it.
