Bears Already Facing Major Competition to Hire Top Coaching Target
This season has been a nightmare for the Chicago Bears. They entered the 2024 season with high hopes and expectations, but things came crashing down. Chicago is 4-10 on the campaign, dropping eight games in a row.
They have missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season and will have a lot of changes incoming this season.
The Bears fired Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29 after the disaster of a loss to the Detroit Lions. The Bears will have GM Ryan Poles and president Kevin Warren leading the search for a new head coach. There have already been names leaked to Chicago and Mike Vrabel is one of them.
While that is early chatter, the New York Jets are also a team that has an interest in Vrabel.
New York Jets Have Interest in Mike Vrabel
According to Connor Hughes of SNY, multiple NFL sources think that Vrabel is the candidate "the Jets covet the most".
NFL Insider Albert Breer revealed that Poles likely wants Vrabel the most early on in the coaching search. Breer also added that Vrabel would likely want to bring Josh McDaniels or Tommy Rees as his offensive coordinator.
While those offensive minds don't sound that exciting regarding the development of Caleb Williams, Vrabel has a stout resume. Across six seasons with the Tennessee Titans, he went 54-45 with three playoff appearances.
He is someone who is a culture changer and takes over a room once he walks in. That's what the Bears need but so do the Jets.
It will come down to what team offers the most money and who Vrabel thinks has a better chance at long-term success. One thing that could be a hurdle for Chicago is that Poles is already the GM.
Vrabel may have the ability to have a say in who the Jets hire as general manager and could seek to bring in someone he has a history with.
If he doesn't care about that and has a rapport with Poles, Chicago could be the landing spot but they'll have competition for the 49-year-old.
