While Cole Kmet continues to get thrown into trade discussions, the Chicago Bears are adamant that they have serious plans for him and that he is a big part of the team. Offensive coordinator Press Taylor was able to explain why they see Kmet as such a valuable piece, even with a rising star in Colston Loveland and a rookie tight end in Sam Roush.
“He can do anything we ask; he can line up at fullback, he can be in line, he can motion out, he can be in space.”
Having a versatile option at tight end is valuable to Chicago, and Kmet brings that.

The team is high on Loveland for a similar reason. While he is not going to be quite as versatile as being used at fullback, the team can classify Loveland as a big slot receiver if they want. However, he can also block if needed.
So, when the Bears put Loveland and Kmet on the field together, that could mean they have a fullback and a slot receiver on the field. It could also mean two tight ends. Of course, it could also mean one tight end, and the other in whatever role they want.
There are few players with that type of versatility. When they have two of them that they can use together, it begins to stress defenses. The reason for drafting Sam Roush is that they continue to use these two in versatile ways, while continuing to have an in-line tight end.
Roush is a third-round rookie, so expectations are not high for his passing game value. They also do not want to put a lot on his plate, so he should not be motioning to fullback too often. However, they valued his ability to block.
So, Roush can get on the field in some capacity as a blocking option. This allows him to progress and excel in an area he is comfortable with during his rookie year. It will also open things up for Kmet and Loveland.
When all three are on the field, they could get heavy and lean into the multiple tight end usage. However, it could just as easily be Kmet in the backfield, Loveland out wide, and Roush blocking in-line.
The different things the team can do is why they will continue to harp on their appreciation for Kmet.
