Bears defensive coordinator all but shuts down Cam Jordan speculation

Dennis Allen praised the longtime Saints pass rusher, but his comments also revealed where Chicago stands at edge rusher.

The Chicago Bears most obvious need this offseason is edge rusher. When the team did not address the spot in the 2026 NFL draft, there was a lot of discussion around the team signing Cam Jordan. However, so far, it appears to be much more discussion than real smoke.

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator dampens Cam Jordan's talk

Dennis Allen was the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints from 2015 to 2021 and then was the head coach from 2022 to 2024. Cameron Jordan was on the defense for the entirety of that run, so the two are very familiar with each other. That is where the interest rumor has stemmed from. The issue is that it is not Allen adding to the rumors. When asked about his thoughts on Jordan, he was sure to mention the career that he had, but also noted that the team is not looking in that direction.

There are two interesting notes to this. First, it is not crazy to not be interested in Jordan. Jordan is going to be 37 years old, and he has seen a noticeable drop in his play recently. Betting on him to come back and be better, or do anything but continue to decline at his age, is a bit wishful. So, the Bears could go in another direction. The interesting note is that Allen says he thinks the team is fine with where they stand right now.

That could just be coach speak for his players, knowing that the odds of signing someone are not great right now, and not wanting to lead the fans on. It could also be a true thought that he is confident with where they are. Everything the Bears have done this offseason signals they like the position they're in.

This would require a few things to happen. First, Dayo Odeyingbo would have to get healthy and return to form without any drop-off quickly. Second, Austin Booker would have to ascend from where he was last year, in both the run and pass rush departments. Next, some combination of Shemar Turner, James Lynch, and Kentavius Street would have to slide out to the edge and take on a legitimate and meaningful role there.

For Lynch and Street, they have done it in spurts, but at this stage of their career, the upside is limited. Turner is young with potential but is also coming off of an injury.

The Bears could be correct to pass on Jordan, but they do not look good at this position without him.
