The Chicago Bears made a pair of roster moves on Monday as they waived an injured member of the defense to get a better look at what a new face could provide on the offensive side of the ball.

This was a decision that will directly impact two areas of the roster, as the running back position, which has turned into a glaring hole following early injuries to Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer, leaves DeAndre Swift and rookie Kyle Monangai as the two top options on the roster. This is where the addition of Brittain Brown could help provide needed depth in the backfield as camp moves forward.

Unfortunately, as Bears fans know, to add a player, you must waive a player, and that player was two-year veteran defensive back Ameer Speed.

Bears Cut Member of 2024 Team, Ameer Speed, After Preseason Tie

Speed, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, appeared in two games for Chicago this past season, with the bulk of his usage coming as part of the special teams unit. To a lesser extent, he was involved with the defense but saw far fewer snaps there than he did as a member of the special teams unit.

Speed's best attribute was, fittingly, his speed. While a video game is typically not the best indicator of the true value of a player, the defensive back was the fastest-rated player on the Bears roster before being released. So, from that regard alone, Chicago's roster got a little slower on Monday following this move by the front office.

In 15 career games, Speed has accumulated nine total tackles with one of those tackles going for a loss. Speed did not record any statistics during his two games with the Bears this past season.

While fans in the Windy City get a first-hand look at what Brown can bring to the offense once he arrives at training camp, it will be interesting to see when and where Speed gets his next shot in the NFL.
