The Chicago Bears are a few days away from having to decide whether to activate slot cornerback Kyler Gordon or keep him on the IR for the remainder of the season. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen noted that he has noticed how hard Gordon is working. However, he made it clear that Gordon still needs to prove himself every day before he can get more opportunities.

“Kyler has missed a lot of time,” stated Allen. “He has been working extremely hard. He's been great around the building. He has done everything we have asked him to do. I have been impressed with what I have seen. “Really, it is about whether you continue to do that day in and day out, and as you prove to yourself that you are able to do that, those opportunities will come for you.”

The Bears opened the 21-day practice window for Gordon on September 30. They have until October 21 to decide whether to activate him or not.

Chicago Bears have a tough decision to make with Kyler Gordon

Typically, the plan is to activate a player after the second week of practice. The first week is about the player shaking off rust and getting acclimated to things. The second week would be focused on getting a potential starter back into the lineup. Given that Gordon was activated 16 days ago, the plan for this week would be about getting him into the lineup.

Allen noted that Gordon needs to stack days. However, he has been a full participant in practice since the team opened his window. So, if Gordon is not activated this week, it is hard to see what is holding him back now.

The Bears do have six more days, and they could activate him for their Week 7 contest against the New England Patriots. They play on Thursday Night Football, so they would activate him the day before their Week 7 matchup.

Then, Gordon would have an extra few days to recover after a Thursday game. If he comes back this week, he would have a quick turnaround for Week 7. So, the team might end up being more cautious than usual. They will not have much time to practice next week, so the work that Gordon gets this week will suggest his status for that game.

The Bears could also activate Gordon this week and have him as an emergency backup. It will be interesting to see how they handle things in the next few days.
