The Chicago Bears have done their due diligence regarding their head coaching vacancy. The Bears have interviewed several candidates from different backgrounds (former head NFL coaches, college coaches, and coordinators).

After seeing the Matt Eberflus tenure flame out in disaster fashion, the Bears’ front office brass wants to find the right guy to lead them in the Caleb Williams era. Most Bears fans wanted the team to go after Mike Vrabel, but he landed the New England Patriots head coaching gig.

With Vrabel off the board, the Bears’ fanbase is turning their attention to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson after Detroit lost to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round.

However, the Bears’ leadership is interviewing an unexpected candidate, who played in the NFL and is successful as a head coach in the college ranks.

Bears News: Chicago to Interview Eddie George for Head Coaching Vacancy

FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported on Saturday that former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George is scheduled to interview for the Bears’ head coaching position on Sunday.

On Sunday, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reported that George’s interview will happen at Halas Hall. Cronin adds George has been on the Bears’ radar for a while and mentioned that the team got to know him more when he was a part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship during OTAs in 2023.

The 51-year-old George had an outstanding nine-year NFL career, mostly with the Titans (eight seasons). After his playing career finished, George joined the coaching ranks, becoming the head coach at Tennessee State in April 2021.

The former All-Pro running back has done an outstanding job at Tennessee State, leading the Tigers to an OVC title for the first time since 1999 and an FCS playoff appearance. George was recognized for his efforts, winning Coach of the Year honors in the OVC.

George’s rise at Tennessee St. hasn’t gone unnoticed and it's not surprising that the Bears want to pick his brain and see if he would be ready for an NFL head coaching job.
