The Chicago Bears needed more depth in the secondary after putting starting strong safety Jaquan Brisker on injured reserve. Brisker suffered a concussion in the Bears’ Week 5 win against the Carolina Panthers.

The former Penn State star defender has been in the league’s concussion protocol for several weeks. With Brisker on injured reserve, he’ll miss the Bears’ next four games.

Without Brisker on the field, the Bears turned to Elijah Hicks, who has played well over the last five games. However, the Bears need another reinforcement, just in case Hicks were to get hurt.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Bears re-signed veteran safety Adrian Colbert on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old defensive back was in training camp with the Bears this summer but was cut ahead of the 53-man roster deadline in August.

Chicago signed Colbert to a reserve/futures deal in January after spending the 2023 season with the team. The veteran defender never played a single regular season game last year as he was placed on injured reserve.

Before being placed on IR, Colbert was again signed to a reserve/futures contract at the end of the 2022 season. He was released from the Tennessee Titans in Aug. 2022 and picked up by the Bears a few months later.

Colbert appeared in two games during that season, playing 20 special teams snaps. Both sides are familiar with each other over the years, making this a good signing, given the circumstances involving Brisker’s health.
