The Chicago Bears have completed their first preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns, and with it comes the fallout of player assessment. The Bears managed to take the game over after the Browns started out the scoring in the first quarter with a field goal, but the Bears didn't let them cover much ground than that. Among the players that did very well, was Beanie Bishop Jr.
Bishop was signed only last week as an emergency depth piece following the knee injury that's set to sideline Bears' safety Coby Bryant for four to six months. With that unexpected shakeup, the Bears are still doing their best to figure out what their secondary will look like when they take the field in Carolina on September 13th. But one thing is absolutely certain: Beanie Bishop won't be on the field.
Beanie Bishop’s roster push comes with one unavoidable complication
It was reported in March that the NFL has suspended Bishop for the first three games of the 2026 season for violating their substance abuse policies. No public report has confirmed what the substance was, but it's important to note that it wasn't any sort of performance enhancing drug. Either way, as a result of this suspension, Bishop is permitted to participate in preseason workouts and contests, but he'll be sidelined for the first three games.
Bishop has been praised for his performance on Saturday, recording two separate interceptions, one off of Shadeur Sanders, and the other off of Dillon Gabriel, respectively. In total, he returned those two interceptions for 55 yards. It was an excellent showing for a 26 year old cornerback looking for a new team. Takeaways were the Bears' superpower in 2025, and with key players that moved that needle no longer in Chicago, this was a promising start.
The Bears still have two more games in the preseason, and plenty of practice in between. The Bears coaching staff will surely do their due diligence to vet their new defense before they take the field in September. Bishop made a good first impression, but can he do well enough to overcome that black hole of the first three games? He'll definitely be a name to follow for the rest of the Bears' 2026 preseason.
