Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus could be on the verge of landing the defensive coordinator gig with the Dallas Cowboys. Eberflus was fired after the Bears’ Week 13 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day.

Despite a mediocre three-year tenure in the Windy City, Eberflus could find his way back on the sidelines next season. However, he isn’t the only Bears coach in the running for the Cowboys’ DC vacancy.

On Sunday, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Bears safeties coach Andre Curtis interviewed for the Cowboys defensive coordinator opening.

Curtis has spent the last two years in Chicago, coaching up the safeties, where he’s worked with Jaquan Brisker and Eddie Jackson. The Bears did not have Brisker for most of the season due to a concussion in Week 5.

However, Chicago still had Kevin Byard starting, who turned in an okay first year with the Bears. He had 130 combined tackles, seven pass deflections, five tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and an interception.

Byard was good in run defense (86.0 grade on PFF -- ranked eighth among 170 qualified safeties), but struggled in pass defense (60.5 coverage grade -- ranked 89th among 170 qualified safeties).

Before joining the Bears’ staff, the 48-year-old Curtis worked in Seattle for multiple seasons (2016-21) coaching their defensive backs. If folks remember, the Seahawks had a good secondary, which featured Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, and Cam Chancellor.

Ultimately, the Bears safeties coach has spent 24 seasons in the NFL, working predominantly with secondaries in St. Louis, New York (Giants), New Orleans, Seattle, and Chicago.

With Ben Johnson now calling the shots in Chicago, it's unlikely Curtis will stay with the team as the new head coach will look to bring in his own guys.

Therefore, even if Curtis doesn’t get the defensive coordinator job with the Cowboys, do not be surprised if Eberflus brings him to Dallas. They have previous experience/history together and Dallas has lost some key members, with Mike McCarthy out the door.
