The Chicago Cubs may have dominated the afternoon on Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark, but the victory quickly became secondary after Alex Bregman took a foul ball to the face that caused him to leave the game. He's since given update that he's okay, and that he's on track to make a full recovery. But there's one heck of a shiner on his face.
It was a dismal scene, considering that Bregman wasn't even involved in the play at the time. He was simply an on-deck batter waiting to come up to bat. A slight bump off of the bat of Nico Hoerner, and suddenly a four seam fastball that didn't mean anything suddenly meant a great deal to a lot of people.
Bregman is almost surely going to miss time due to this if the photos he posted are anything to go off of. Bregman himself seems to be in good spirits, but there's no way he can play with his eye swollen shut.
The Cubs are currently 87-69, and tightly locked in the Wild Card race with the San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies. Over the last few days, little has changed between the three, with the Cubs remaining constantly tied for the top spot. With the Cubs unable to break away and hold the lead down, the end of the season is going to be a barn-burner for who stands when the dust settles.
Bregman is batting .262 right now with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs through 153 games. Beyond that production, he's one of the premier corner infielders in the game, meaning his glove on the field will be missed. The Cubs are lucky enough to have Pedro Ramirez and Matt Shaw waiting in the wings, but they'll certainly want to have their starting third baseman back.
The Cubs have yet to release a timeline, but seeing as it's not even been 24 hours since the injury took place, that's not particularly surprising. The team will undoubtedly wish to get Bregman back on the field when he's ready to play, but at this late stage int he season, time is of the essence.
Hopefully Bregman can make a full recovery and be ready to go for the first tastes of October baseball. But for now, the Cubs need to focus on maintaining that top Wild Card spot, because it could hold significant home-field advantage when it really matters.
