4. Gerald Everett, TE
Everett has a case to be the worst free agent signing the team made in 2024. He had the worst year of his career by far last season where he only had eight receptions for 36 yards and no touchdowns.
Starting tight end Cole Kmet also had a down year, so another argument can be made that the coaching staff and new quarterback Caleb Williams simply did not have a game plan to utilize their tight ends.
Everett signed a two-year deal last season worth $12M, of which a little over $6M was fully guaranteed. This signing was likely a pairing wanted from Shane Waldron as he coached him with the Rams and Seahawks in the past. The Waldron hiring was a complete mess looking back now and the signing of Everett is tied to that.
The Bears do not have much depth behind Kmet at tight end so will need to figure out who they can bring in this offseason. Marcedes Lewis has to stop playing football eventually and does not provide much at this stage of his career anyways.
The new coaching staff can perhaps find a guy later in the draft with some upside or find another veteran in free agency to fit Ben Johnson's plans more than Everett and save $5.5M in cap space by cutting him before June 1.
