5 Roster Bubble Players Chicago Bears Must Keep
Jedrick Wills
Wills appears to be fading out of the left tackle competition. Theo Benedet appears to be the best swing tackle, Braxton Jones has the most chances to start Week 1, and Ozzy Trapilo has returned to help down the road.
It could make Wills and Kiran Amegadjie expendable at roster cutdown days. Wills has beaten out Amegadjie at least. He has graded out better and was getting right tackle work ahead of Amegadjie in the second preseason game. So, if only one stays, it should be Wills.
James Lynch
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen enjoys big edge rushers who can slide inside on pass-rushing downs. Lynch has played 75 snaps in the preseason as he fights for his job. Of those, 25 are outside the tackle, 18 over the tackle, 25 in the B-Gap, and even seven in the A-Gap. So, he has aligned everywhere from edge rusher to nose tackle. That versatility should keep the five-year veteran on the roster.
Jack Sanborn
Sanborn joined a crowded linebacker room. However, Noah Sewell and Keyshaun Elliott have been on the PUP all summer. Nephi Sewell just went down with what looks like a serious injury. Sanborn has 27 snaps on defense in the preseason, but it is the 26 special teams snaps across five phases that will push him onto the roster.
Josh Blackwell
Blackwell is hoping to make the roster for the fifth season. He has played outside and in the slot in the preseason, and the team even asked him to play safety in practice when they got thin. Still, while Blackwell only has six special teams snaps this preseason, he has 992 over four years with Chicago, including 284 on five phases last year.
That, plus a thin secondary, should put him on the roster.
Skyler Thomas
Coby Bryant is going to be placed on the IR. Cam Lewis will likely slide into the slot. It leaves Xavier Woods, Dillon Thieneman, and a big question behind that. Thomas has been getting work at safety and as a core special teams option. His impressive summer should get him on the roster.
