The Chicago Bears opened the practice window at the earliest times for a few players on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Now that cornerback Kyler Gordon, linebacker Noah Sewell, and defensive lineman Shemar Turner are practicing, head coach Ben Johnson said he will give them until the end of the week before deciding to activate any of them.
Chicago Bears could activate 3 players before Week 5
If the Bears do not activate these players by the end of this week, they will have until the end of next week to do so. Then, if those players are not activated after that, they would have to be placed on the season-ending IR. Johnson does not see any setbacks for the three, so the question is whether they are activated before this week or the following week.
Kyler Gordon
Gordon is the most intriguing name to keep an eye on. When healthy, he is one of the better slot cornerbacks in the NFL. However, he has hardly been healthy in the past couple of seasons. Gordon left the team to rehab and now appears to be ready to finish the year.
This would give much-needed stability to a secondary that has shuffled a lot. They could start Gordon in the slot and keep Malik Muhammad, who has been moving from the slot to the outside, on the outside. This will make life easier for the rookie.
Shemar Turner
Turner tore his ACL about a year ago. So, he is right on track to return on the expected timeline. The Bears need edge rusher help in the worst way. Marcus Davenport retired and James Lynch has not been helping. Turner would provide a run-stuffing force on the edge and can add some pass-rush help along the interior. He can make the needs for Kentavius Street and Dayo Odeyingbo taking on bigger roles a bit less significant.
Noah Sewell
Sewell is recovering from a torn Achilles. He suffered the injury in Week 17 of last season, so he was expected to be the last of the three to return. Sewell would not make an impact on defense, but last season he played 157 snaps on special teams. Right now, Jack Sanborn and rookie Keyshaun Elliott are core special teams options. Veteran D’Marco Jackson gets some work, but also plays on defense. It would be interesting to see who loses a role if Sewell is called up. It could be a defensive back on special teams.
