3 Bears That Must Be Cut This Offseason
2. Gerald Everett, tight end
One of the things the Chicago Bears desperately tried to do in the 2024 offseason was add playmakers to surround their young quarterback with the best weapons possible. And to their credit, it was a strategy that worked out pretty well for them overall.
Going after a tight end like Gerald Everett to pair up with Cole Kmet certainly was an admirable idea last offseason but things didn't work out in Chicago for the Bears or Everett in that ordeal.
Whether he was with the Rams, Seahawks, or Chargers, Everett has been a pretty reliable and consistent weapon in the passing game throughout the majority of his career. Prior to arriving in Chicago, he was averaging 45 receptions for 450 yards and three touchdowns per 17 games played.
Once he got to Chicago? Well, let's just say Everett fell off the map in 2024.
Despite his ties to Shane Waldron (who was fired during the season), Everett only caught eight passes in 17 games for the Bears and he didn't even hit 250 snaps played in his first year in Chicago. Considering he's on the books this season for $6.48 million with just $1 million in dead cap, this is a salary cap casualty I think we can all see coming from a million miles away.
Everett will undoubtedly land on his feet with another organization and probably get back to being an actual asset in the passing game somewhere else. It was just unfortunate for him that the Bears ended up bringing in so many different mouths to feed and he got lost completely in the shuffle there.
The Bears will save nearly $5.5 million by letting him go in 2025.
