3 Bears Draft Targets to Watch at the Senior Bowl
2. Shemar Stewart, DE, Texas A&M
The clear-cut top defensive player in the draft this year is Penn State's Abdul Carter who should be drafted in the top 5. Mason Graham will likely be the first defensive tackle off the board, but after that, there is not really a consensus on the next defensive player off the board.
While Stewart is not currently viewed as one of the top defensive prospects, a strong week at the Senior Bowl can turn some heads and get him higher on some boards.
Stewart has great size for the defensive end position at 6,5", 281 pounds. He also boasts 34" arms which make him a lot to handle as an edge threat. New Bears defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, is likely salivating looking at Stewart's measurables as it is clear he has a preference for massive defensive ends.
His stats do not jump off the page as he only registered 4.5 sacks in three years, but the talent is there to make a jump. He will need to work on using his hands when rushing as he struggles in this regard currently. He relies on pure strength and athleticism to win right now, so he will need to refine his pass-rushing repertoire to be able to beat NFL tackles.
Stewart has all the physical traits you look for in a defensive end, with the right coaching he can become a true problem for an offense. The Bears currently have a couple of second-round picks and a third-rounder, I can see that being the landing spot for Stewart right now as things stand.
