The Chicago Cubs need to resign their star, Cody Bellinger. With them missing out on both Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, the star players available on the trade or free agency wire are not in abundance anymore, with Bellinger at the top of the list right now. It is looking like there will be a bidding war, with one team expected to pursue him as much as the Cubs will.

Resigning Cody Bellinger will not come easy for the Chicago Cubs

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Toronto Blue Jays are expected to focus their attention on signing Cody Bellinger as they try to sure up their outfield and first base spot. He would fit into a rotation between center and first most likely in the same way he would for the Cubs. At this point, it will come down to money even with the Cubs being the familiar team. Unfortunately for the Cubs, the Blue Jays seem willing to pay whatever it takes. They had become a finalist for Ohtani’s services which tells the story about what kind of funds they are working with this offseason.

If the Cubs miss on Bellinger, fans might start to get worried about what this lineup is going to look like next year. While it is not time to panic yet, the Cubs need to not only retain their star player, but also add pitching and another power bat. With Tyler Glasnow now on the Los Angeles Dodgers, once again the market is thinning out. Bringing back Bellinger is a top priority for the Cubs and needs to be done sooner rather than later.

The Blue Jays’ heavy interest in Bellinger will undoubtedly drive up the cost of his services, so the Cubs will most likely have to overpay in order to retain him. The bidding war between the Blue Jays and Cubs will be the big story to follow over the next couple of weeks, and at this point, Bellinger has all of the leverage knowing how desperate both clubs are at this point in the offseason.
