Hahn and Williams are out, and La Russa is back in.
Hahn and Kenny were fired during this past season. They deserved it. The disaster that was Tony La Russa’s second stint should also mean he is not allowed within 50 feet of Guaranteed Rate Field.
It is like putting your head back into the mouth of the tiger that just tried to eat you. Clearly the Sox do not understand the concept of fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. Shame is all that La Russa brought in 2022.
Tony can claim his role is…
"“My title is senior adviser. It’s focused on a couple of areas, and it’s limited to where I offer opinions based on my experiences and what I’ve learned over the years.”"
It is hard to believe him when he later told Van Schouwen that…
"“How the team comes together and how they practice and compete, that’s where my focus is.”"
You can take it as he will be involved in how the roster is constructed and the style in which it will play. You can bet it will be a roster and style that is counter intuitive to the modern game.
La Russa says his role boils down to just giving his “two cents.” You cannot underestimate that his opinion is worth more than that. He is tight with the owner. The owner ignored hiring better candidates for the manager job back in 2020. He is keeping him around to give Tony his purpose back.
You can bet what he suggests has the weight of Reinsdorf behind him. That is why it is hard to believe Tony minimizing his role.
