Paul DeJong explains the Chicago White Sox allowed him to stay in the big leagues (probably because they were the only team).

The Sox want to get better defensively. They also need a bridge player at shortstop until top prospect Colson Montgomery is ready for the big leagues.

Enter Paul DeJong.

The Antioch, Illinois native was signed to a one-year deal worth under $2 million. He is all glove, no bat.

There is nothing wrong with this signing considering he accomplishes the two above-mentioned roster goals. Except when he spoke with the media, he listed one interesting nugget as to why he chose the White Sox.

"“I just had a great opportunity to play in the major leagues with the White Sox. Having that major-league deal helped me decide to come here.”"

Local radio personality Dan Bernstein accurately pointed out the foolishlessness of that quote as it shows the Sox were probably the only team to offer him a major-league deal.

It shows this franchise once again jumped the market. They probably could have waited right up until Spring Training started and got DeJong on minor-league deal with a non-roster invite to Spring Training.

When this team keeps putting self-imposed spending restrictions, every dollar counts. That means Chris Getz repeated the same failures of the previous administration by not correctly reading the market. Instead, he was just like Hahn when it came to blindly pursuing players he covets.

Everyone remember when Hahn overpaid for Mike Clevinger and the public relations headache that came with it?
