Tony La Russa is still involved with the Chicago White Sox.

Nothing hurt the Sox contention window more than when Reinsdorf brought La Russa back as the team’s manager before the 2021 offseason. Reinsdorf always regretted firing Tony back in the mid-1980s, and he found a way to make good with La Russa.

It was not good for the franchise.

The problem was La Russa had been retired for 10 seasons, and baseball had dramatically changed during his time away from running a clubhouse.

It showed when he was leading the team. Yes, the Sox won the 2021 AL Central Division title. They also got smoked by the Houston Astros in the playoffs and then declined into mediocrity in 2022.

La Russa had to retire before that season ended because of health issues. The thought was he would never be around the team again. Wrong!

Tony helped Jerry in the worst general manager search known to man. Making matters worse is he is still involved with the White Sox. Supposedly he is mentoring minor league coaches and players.

"‘‘That type of experience is invaluable in the team-building aspect with so many little pieces that go into a major-league club,’’ first-year general manager Chris Getz said Tuesday. ‘‘There is going to be mentoring with some of our minor-league coaches and our players, as well. He’s an asset. I’m going to take advantage of [having] him.’’"

You can bet he is also mentoring Getz. You can bet he is probably doing more than just mentoring. La Russa is running the White Sox. That is scary considering the further damage he could do to the roster with his outdated ideas.

Remember when the club could not hit home runs in 2022? Part of that was because Tony loved it when the lineup produced singles. Old school baseball does not work in a game where pitchers are throwing 100mph fastballs and the opponent understands the value of hitting ball over the fence.
