The Chicago Cubs have benefited greatly from the emergence and growth of young utility player Christopher Morel over the last couple of seasons. Although it has been a roller coaster time for him – coming up to the majors in 2022, starting 2023 in the minors, coming back up, and learning multiple positions – Morel has handled it all with positive vibes and grace. The kid just loves playing baseball and he loves the Chicago Cubs.

It has to be hard for him these last couple of weeks to hear his name in multiple trade rumors during the hot stove season. Whether the Cubs are indeed dangling him out there to see what teams bite or not, it’s not easy to hear that the team you love is considering moving on from them.

According to a report, however, the Cubs front office believes Morel’s upside is superstar caliber (paid subscription).

From his very first home run to his walk-off against the White Sox this past season, Morel has been beyond fun to watch play baseball for Cubs fans. The electricity he brings to the ballpark every night reminds me of watching former Cub, Javier Baez play defense – he can make anything happen at any time.

So you could make the case that the Cubs truly value Morel and that matches that of MVP versatile players like Kris Bryant, Mookie Betts, and Cody Bellinger because of what they see in him. But, given what time of year it is, this could also be an act or show – like that of a car dealership throwing an extra few grand on a sticker price to see if that gets the buyer to drive up their offer.
