Former Chicago Bears great has officially announced his retirement
By Thomas Erbe
After 18 seasons of kicking in the National Football League, 11 with the Chicago Bears, the great Robbie Gould has officially announced his retirement. He spent time with the Bears, the New York (football) Giants, and the San Francisco 49ers.
Gould is calling it a career after posting some all-time numbers. He ranks 10th all-time in points scored, 12th in extra points, 8th in made field goals, and 9th in career make percentage. His 39 field goals made in 2017 are tied for 4th most in a single season.
Robbie Gould will always be a Chicago Bears legend.
Gould still leads the franchise in points scored with 1,207. The next closest is Kevin Butler at 1,116, and Butler played in 5 more games than him (sitting 1 & 2 in that category). Gould has the most field goals made and the second-best make percentage (minimum 100 attempts).
The Bears decided to move on from Gould after the 2015 season and they have to have regretted it ever since. I know the fans do. I can think of a couple of instances where his abilities would have come in handy in clutch moments, one being in a magical year where everything was clicking for some reason. I don’t know.
Instead, he went on to have an extraordinary 6 seasons with the 49ers, making it to one Super Bowl and contending in numerous other years.
Gould has always remained true to Chicagoland and continues to call it home. He’ll now ride off into retirement from football to spend time with his family and work on his already incredible golf game.
Cheers to you, #9.
