Rhys Hoskins is perfect for the Chicago Cubs

After missing all of 2023 due to injury, first baseman Rhys Hoskins is looking for a new contract and home. The Cubs seem like a perfect fit for him, as there is no definitive answer at first on the roster as currently constructed.

Last year, the hope was Trey Mancini would be an under-the-radar signing that would spark longevity for the position. That is very far from what happened. It ended up being a combination of Matt Mervis, Patrick Wisdom, and eventually Cody Bellinger. Wisdom is coming back next year, but he is far from the long-term answer.

It’ll come down to a matter of the contract. Will it be a one-year “prove it” deal to make sure he bounces back properly after injury? Or was his work prior to that enough to earn him the insurance of multiple years? Personally, I would love to see the Cubs strike a deal with him in the three-year range. That is what Happ and Hoerner signed for and that is the clear winning window. The Cubs have struggled without consistency at first ever since the departure of Anthony Rizzo in 2021. The Cubs could have their long-term answer ready for them right here.
