Chicago Cubs Rumors: latest on Bellinger, Chapman, and Hoskins
By Thomas Erbe
MLB Winter Meetings are taking over Nashville, Tennessee this week as the Chicago Cubs and their big league counterparts meet to talk some business.
The real action of the meetings comes outside of the actual meetings because the hot stove season of free agency is just about as hot as it’s ever been.
All eyes remain on Shohei Ohtani and his decision as he will probably be the first big domino to fall with how sought after he is and the size of his potential contract. And while the Cubs remain locked in on luring him to Chicago, there are a couple of other big fish out there to cast lines toward.
Here is the latest on the Chicago Cubs’ free agency plans.
This New York Post report has the Cubs as still having an interest in free agents Rhys Hoskins, Matt Chapman, and last year’s Comeback Player of the Year (and Cub) Cody Bellinger.
Hoskins would be an incredibly savvy addition for the Cubs, giving stability to the batting lineup and assurance of a needed answer at first base.
A Chapman deal would lock him up for third base, but would also intensify the trade market rumors and the future of Christopher Morel.
If the Cubs were to end up re-signing Bellinger, I would imagine his time would be most spent at first base with Pete Crow-Armstrong hopefully taking over in center field. (This change of position leads me to believe Bellinger will most likely not be back).
There’s plenty of work to be done, but we’re all probably going to have to wait on an Ohtani decision.
