3 things to know about the Chicago Blackhawks losing to Columbus
By Todd Welter
The Chicago Blackhawks got drilled by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
You read that right. The Hawks got crushed in a battle of two teams sitting at the bottom of their respective divisions.
This is nothing to be alarmed about. Chicago is in the early stages of an extensive rebuild.
Still, it is not fun to get blown out by the Blue Jackets. Making it worse is the Hawks have lost five consecutive games.
Here is what you need to know about what happened to the Chicago Blackhawks in this blowout defeat…
Connor Bedard is a double-digit goal scorer.
Bedard scored his tenth goal of the season in the first period.
Only Patrick Laine and Steve Yzerman got to 10 goals faster during their rookie seasons.
Another stud rookie played just as well for the Blue Jackets.
Adam Fantilli was considered a nice consolation prize to whoever got the second pick in the NHL Draft Lottery. The Anaheim Ducks surprised many when they passed on him.
Fantilli fell to Columbus, and they were more than happy to take him.
Fantilli has been overshadowed by Bedard this season in terms of rookie hype. He has been solid at the beginning of his NHL career.
He made a beautiful pass to set up Patrik Lane for a goal to go up 7-1.
It will be interesting to see if Bedard and Fantilli ever get a chance to match up in a Stanley Cup Final.
Petr Mrazek had a rough night.
The goalie allowed five goals on 18 shot attempts. He was pulled during the second period.
Mrazek had been solid up until this blowout.
The blue line did not help him much as the Blue Jackets got 18 shot attempts.
That is not to say Mrazek did not let a few easy ones go through. Arvid Soderblom finished up in goal and allowed two more goals.
