Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus needs to be fired immediately
Sunday was shaping up to be a statement victory for the Chicago Bears over the Detroit Lions.
The victory was going to mark the first two-game winning streak in the tenure of Matt Eberflus as the Bears’ head coach along with the first victory for Eberflus against a NFC North division.
The issue is that the Bears stopped playing with 4:15 remaining in the game. Despite the Bears having a 26-14 lead at that point in the game, the Lions went on to score 17 unanswered points and win the game.
The Bears were the healthiest they have been all season on Sunday including Justin Fields returning after missing the previous four games and for all the times throughout the past month that Eberflus has suggested that the team is close, he is wrong and will continue to be wrong.
Under this coaching staff, for the past two years, the Bears have proven that they do not know how to win games and, instead, find new ways to lose a game.
While other teams that were in the Bears’ position such as the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos have shown progression for their struggles during the first part of the 2023-2024 NFL season, the Bears have shown regression.
Momentum appeared to be growing in the direction that the Bears may bring Eberflus back next season and Sunday was another reminder of why that can’t happen. Eberflus has proven to be an overpromoted defensive coordinator and in a season where his defense has blown a two-possession lead twice in the fourth, this form of incompetence can not continue. That is not even getting into the fact that Eberflus has had two assistants removed from his coaching due to HR-related issues.
The Bears are a broken organization and no, a new head coach won’t solve all their issues but it’s more hope than what would be had if they decide not to make a change.
