Chicago White Sox News: Chris Getz addresses state of the team
Too many times throughout the past two seasons when the Chicago White Sox have seemingly taken a step forward with their progress as a team, there is an immediate two steps taken backward.
That was the case when White Sox general manager Chris Getz’ spoke with reporters on Tuesday from Arizona while attending MLB’s GM meetings this week.
The meetings that are taking place this week are not the same as the larger-scale winter meetings that take place in December. At the meetings this week, this is generally where general managers set the tone for their team’s off-season.
There is no question that Getz did that on Tuesday and there is a lot to like from what he had to say.
The biggest takeaway from Getz is that he admitted that he was not a fan of the team as currently constructed and that no player on the roster is viewed as untouchable. There was some refreshing honesty in what Getz had to say on Tuesday and the hope is that there is action behind his words.
One trade that would prove Getz is correct in his assessment would be the White Sox trading Dylan Cease this off-season. Cease is under team control until 2026 and there would be no better time for the White Sox to trade Cease.
It would seem that the White Sox may not be ready to contend throughout the next two seasons and there is no reason for the team to waste two seasons of Cease and then let him walk for nothing in free agency.
Tony La Russa is still involved in Chicago White Sox baseball operations.
Getz also said the quiet part out loud on Tuesday night when he confirmed that former White Sox manager Tony La Russa is still involved with the team’s baseball operations.
The issue is that the White Sox’s chairman Jerry Reinsdorf’s confidant is Tony La Russa. Meaning, the advisory role that La Russa is not the same advisory role that a team would hand a former player just to keep them busy. La Russa has Reinsdorf’s ear and that has often led to La Russa’s vision being the direction for the team and that is outrageous considering La Russa being hired as the team’s manager is what ignited the derailment of the last rebuild.
