If rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent succeeded in his time as the Chicago Bears starting quarterback, he would have been the outlier to the rule of thumb in the NFL regarding undrafted quarterbacks in the NFL.

The rule is that those quarterbacks often have a ceiling that stops short of being a capable starting quarterback in the NFL.

That would have been the reason why many fans needed to have caution after Bagent defeated the Los Vegas Raiders in his first career NFL start. Yes, Bagent did what was asked of him and that was enough for the Bears to defeat a Raiders team that has since fired their head coach and general manager.

Tyson Bagent’s limitation as a starting quarterback at the NFL level has been on display over the past two Chicago Bears’ losses.

What we have seen, however, in the past two weeks is the limitations that Bagent has as a quarterback at the NFL level.

Bagent proved that he is capable of doing what a backup quarterback is normally asked in that he can execute a game plan while playing from a lead. What Bagent has also proved is that, at this juncture, he is not a quarterback who can play from behind. Bagent struggles with anticipatory throws across the middle of the field and that is due to his inability to rip it. The knock on Bagent’s arm strength is not that he can’t throw the ball down the field but rather, he does not have enough zip on the ball to succeed at the intermediate throws across the middle of the field.

Bagent was responsible for four of the Bears’ five turnovers on Sunday in the team’s loss to the Bears and the debate of whether he should be the starting quarterback over Justin Fields should be over. And, hopefully, this can be a lesson for Bears fans, just because Fields might not be the answer for the Bears at the quarterback position, that does not mean that the next guy will be.
