Cubs News: Cody Bellinger is the NL Comeback Player of the Year
The Chicago Cubs had a really good season. They had a pretty tough ending but they still have to reflect on the fact that they were a year ahead of schedule. They played very well in the second half and that allowed them to be in the race.
One of the reasons that they were so good was that they were smart with their spending. A lot of good players joined the organization for the 2023 season and the team played very well once things all started to gel.
One of those players was Cody Bellinger. He was so great this season that he earned himself a nomination for the Silver Slugger. He was one of three Cubs to be nominated for the award.
Bellinger earned that by slashing .307/.356/.525 with an OPS of .881. He hit 26 homers to go with 97 RBIs and 95 runs scored. This man even found a way to steal 20 bases which is very impressive. His all-around game really helped his team win some games.
The Chicago Cubs made a very smart move by bringing Cody Bellinger in.
A lot of people were skeptical about Bellinger and what he would bring this season when he first signed. Of course, this is because of the fact that he was borderline terrible with the Los Angeles Dodgers over the last handful of years.
Bellinger went from being an MVP winner to a player who needed to leave the team quickly. The Cubs gave him a chance to revive his career and he took full advantage of it. He was even better than anything anyone could have expected. Honestly, he was almost as good as his MVP season.
As a result of all these things, Bellinger was named to be the National League Comeback Player of the Year. He is well deserving of this honor.
The AL version of this award came from the other side of town as Liam Hendriks won it. He is as well deserving of this award as anyone who ever played baseball because of the fact that he came back from cancer. It was truly great to watch both of these guys play in 2023.
Bellinger is a free agent now. Jed Hoyer chose not to trade him at the deadline in an effort to stay winning. That sent a good message to Bellinger, the team, and future free agents. However, they need to get this man extended as soon as possible. He proved himself this season.
