Cris Collinsworth had a terrible Chicago Bears QB take

The Chicago Bears got blown out on Sunday Night Football by the Los Angeles Chargers.

It turns out quarterback Tyson Bagent might not be a worthy alternative to Justin Fields.

Bagent proved he could throw the ball past 10 yards with his first pass. Other than that, he played like a rookie quarterback destined to be a career backup.

There is nothing wrong with that considering he came from a Division II program and went undrafted.

His flaw in not having a powerful enough NFL arm was on display for most of the night.

He floated some balls. He got confused by some of the defensive looks. Some of his passes did not have the necessary zip and he was picked off twice.

Bagent completed 25 of 37 passes for 232 yards and he ran for a touchdown. It was still not enough to show that he is the Bears’ version of Brock Purdy.

We know NBC’s Sunday Night Football Cris Collinsworth is high on Bagent.

He fawned all over him like he used to with Aaron Rodgers.

It sucks that he advanced this Bagent vs. Fields story instead of just focusing on the great story Bagent is, but we still need to get a full evaluation of Fields.

Speaking of Fields and Bagent, Collinsworth actually thinks that the coaching staff should have Fields study what Bagent did in a game where the offense scored 13 points.

Collinsworth has always been known for his, umm, interesting takes that make him sound “out of town” stupid when it comes to the Bears.

Collinsworth made it sound like Bagent played much better than his 62 passer rating.

Collinsworth ignored that Fields was out because he was injured. It felt like he really thought the Bears went with Bagent because he was the better quarterback.

Can we circle back to when Collinsworth insinuated that Fields needs to study his backup? That is like asking a resident doctor to study what the medical student is doing.

What makes his takes controversial is where he picked up this narrative that what Bagent does might benefit Justin Fields.

It could be his perception was shaped by general manager Ryan Poles, head coach Matt Eberflus, or offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

If it is Luke Getsy feeding the narrative, then it is another piece of evidence that he is a terrible offensive coordinator.

Now, let’s be fair here. Bagent has played better from the pocket than Fields.

Justin Fields has not made the progress he needs to make as a pocket passer. He has played 22 quarters and some change of football this season and has played well in only seven of them.

In those seven quarters, he was balling out doing the things he is comfortable doing. Anytime he has tried to play the way Getsy wants him to play, Fields has looked awful.

It looks like Getsy wants Fields to be another Aaron Rodgers when that is just not Fields’ game. Getsy is just not going to give that up.

Bagent looked great running Getsy’s offense against the Las Vegas Raiders. When tasked with needing to make big plays because the Chicago Bears had to face an opposing offense with a legit quarterback, Bagent could not deliver.

Poor play-calling did not help Bagent either against the Chargers.

It was just another indictment that some of Fields’ struggles can be attributed to the coaching staff.  That was supposed to be the “No Excuses” season for Fields and yet, here we are with excuses.

Now bus-tossing has followed.

It seems like the organization is spinning the narrative that they cannot coach Fields because he is unable to run what they want him to do.

That is organizational dysfunction at the highest level in a season filled with it.

The Chicago Bears were embarrassed on national television again. light. Related Story
