3 Chicago Cubs players nominated for the Gold Glove Award
The Chicago Cubs were an outstanding baseball team in 2023. They ended up blowing their chance of making the playoffs in the end but they are clearly way ahead of schedule.
Part of playing so well this year has been playing good defense. We see a lot of the top teams in the league loaded with Gold Glove Award nominees. Well, the Cubs aren’t much different.
The Cubs have three men nominated for the award this year and they all help this team win a bunch of games on both sides of the ball. These are the three Chicago Cubs Gold Glove Award nominees:
The Chicago Cubs have three really good players nominated for the Gold Glove.
1. Nico Hoerner – 2B
The Chicago Cubs made a great decision when they drafted Nico Hoerner. He has turned into a great hitter but he also plays incredible defense in the middle of the infield. He was an incredible shortstop but different roster transactions forced him to switch to second base.
Instead of complaining or requesting a trade, he moved without saying a word and became elite at that position as well. Hoerner is a nominee for second base just one year into playing the position. He is nominated alongside Ha-Seong Kim of the San Diego Padres and Bryson Scott of the Philadelphia Phillies.
2. Dansby Swanson
The roster transaction that moved Hoerner to second base was the signing of Dansby Swanson. In year one with the Cubs, he came in and earned himself a nomination for the Gold Glove at shortstop.
With the Atlanta Braves before Chicago, he already won one so he’d love to make it multiple. Swanson has been one of the best defensive shortstops for a long time and that has continued into his Cubs career. He is nominated alongside Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets and Ezequiel Tovar of the Colorado Rockies.
3. Ian Happ
Instead of trading Ian Happ for a bunch of good prospects that may or may not turn out to become MLB players, they kept him and extended him. For a team in the position that the Cubs were in to do something like that showed a commitment to winning.
Happ has rewarded them. He is a great hitter too but he played some Gold Glove defense in left field this season once again. If he wins it, that will make it two years in a row winning the award. He is nominated with David Peralta of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Eddie Rosario of the Atlanta Braves.
All three of these guys hit well and are incredible contributors to the Cubs’ success in every way. Now, they are being recognized for their great play out in the field. We’ll see who comes home with the award.
