While the takeaways from the Chicago Bears victory over the Washington Commanders last Thursday were mostly positive, there was some concern as starting running back Khalil Herbert was unable to finish the game due to an ankle injury.

The Bears’ depth at the running back position took a major hit on Thursday as along with Herbert, rookie running back Roschon Johnson suffered a concussion against the Commanders, and veteran running back Travis Homer suffered a hamstring injury.

Johnson is beginning the week in the concussion protocol and his status for the Bears game against the Minnesota Vikings is uncertain. Meanwhile, the belief is that Herbert suffered a high-ankle sprain and will miss multiple weeks.

Chicago Bears starting running back Khalil Herbert is expected to miss multiple weeks with an ankle injury.

After rushing for 103 yards against the Denver Broncos and another 76 yards prior to his injury on Thursday night, Herbert appeared to be finding his stride as the primary running back in the Bears’ offensive scheme.

Typically, a high-ankle sprain takes anywhere from 4-to-8 weeks to recover from, and with the Bears’ depth at the running back position being tested, the team brought back former running back Darrynton Evans. Evans spent the 2022 season and started this season on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

The injuries to Herbert, Johnson, and Homer may finally lead the team to turn veteran running back D’Onta Foreman. Foreman signed with the Bears this off-season with the idea that he would compete with Herbert for the primary running back spot on the team but has been a health scratch in all but one of the team’s games this season.

This is not unfamiliar territory for Foreman. After the Carolina Panthers traded Christian McCaffrey last season, the team turned to Foreman and the 2017 third-round draft pick of the Houston Texans rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and 5 touchdowns.
