The Chicago Cubs have had an outstanding season in all honesty. They definitely ran out of gas toward the end but they played meaningful baseball into late September which is always nice. The Cubs had no expectations coming into this season which makes it especially impressive.

The Cubs were swept by the Atlanta Braves last week which put them in danger of missing the playoffs coming into the final weekend of the season.

They had to worry about the results of the Miami Marlins coming into Saturday night as a result of the MLB games played on Friday night. Miami’s magic number was 1 which meant a Cubs loss or a Marlins win would get them in.

The Cubs did end up winning by a final score of 10-6 but that wasn’t enough. They needed the Miami Marlins to lose their game and they didn’t. They defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 7-3. Of course, that clinched the Wild Card berth for them. The Cubs are eliminated from postseason contention

The Chicago Cubs are not going to the postseason in 2023 after a collapse.

Again, although it stings that they let that cushion slip away, this team played meaningful baseball in game 161. Most teams would sign up for that at this point in time. Now, an off-season will begin to try and add more so they can avoid a bad start and avoid falling off a cliff in the end.

The Arizona Diamondbacks also clinched a spot in the National League Postseason. It will be then and the Marlins joining the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Philadelphia Phillies. It should, despite missing the Cubs, be incredibly entertaining.

Obviously, the big bad Atlanta Braves are going to be the favorite going in but some injuries to their pitching staff make even them a question mark. Anybody that’s in can win which is why it is pretty disappointing that the Cubs missed out.

Now, the Chicago Cubs will play one final game in the regular season. It will be a match against the Milwaukee Brewers who will represent the NL Central in the playoffs. They are the only team from the division moving on.

It may not feel like it right now but this is a team worth being proud of. They have some work to do this off-season but they are closer than a lot of teams in the league.
