Almost everything went wrong for the Chicago Cubs on Friday
The Chicago Cubs came into this weekend looking to get back on track after a brutal sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves. That really took a heavy hit to their playoff chances but they still had a chance coming into the last series of the season.
Things went bad for them in every way on Friday, however. Everything that could go wrong for them did. It started with the game between the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins are the team that took that Wild Card spot from the Cubs.
Pittsburgh took a 3-0 lead and looked like they were going to do the Cubs a solid. Unfortunately, they blew that lead and let the Marlins come all the way back. Miami won it by a final score of 4-3. That reduced their magic number to two.
Then, the Chicago Cubs played their big rival in the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew already clinched the NL Central but they certainly want to end the Cubs’ season if they can. Everyone knew they were going to go all out to get rid of them.
The Chicago Cubs are in big trouble following the events of Friday night.
Milwaukee got out to a 3-0 lead (the theme of the night) but they allowed the Cubs to get the game tied. Ian Happ hit a solo shot in the 9th inning after the Cubs scored two to get the game tied. Right then and there, it looked like they could end up winning the game.
Lately, the Cubs have enjoyed being walked off. Well, that trend continued on Friday as the Brewers walked them off by a final score of 4-3. They didn’t let the Cubs coming back bother them too much and they found a way to win a baseball game. That is the difference between good teams and mediocre/bad teams.
The Cubs losing means that the Miami Marlins’ magic number has dropped to one. The next win for Miami or loss by the Cubs will clinch a playoff berth for the Fish. That next chance will come on Saturday night.
The only good news of the night for the Cubs is the fact that the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the Houston Astros. They, like the Marlins, would need to be swept in this series for the Cubs to have their spot but there is still hope.
Chicago’s series with Milwaukee will continue on Saturday. That also holds true for Miami and Arizona in their respective series as well. With two games left, they are holding on for dear life but you never know what happens next. We’ll see if they live to fight another day.
