The Chicago Cubs blew a huge chance to win a massive game

The Chicago Cubs came into Tuesday night’s matchup with a magic number of six. They are really getting close to making the playoffs but they are also fighting for their life. After sweeping the Colorado Rockies, they needed a big effort vs. the Atlanta Braves.

They got out to a great start against the Braves. In fact, they were winning 6-0 after the top of the 6th inning. Doing something like that against the best team in the league is very difficult and something to build on. Unfortunately, however, the game went south from there.

The Braves scored multiple runs in every inning after that and won the game by a score of 7-6. They took the lead in the bottom of the 8th when Seiya Suzuki missed an easy flyout that would have ended the inning with a 6-5 lead. It was probably their worst loss of the season.

Atlanta is amazing and capable of these things but the Cubs needed to hang on there against a team like that. Now, these last two games in the series are going to be difficult. With the Arizona Diamondbacks beating the Chicago White Sox, the Cubs needed this win.

It is even worse that a very preventable error caused the Cubs to lose as they were unable to tie it in the bottom of the 9th. It feels like the kind of loss that sends a team spiraling toward not making it to the playoffs.

The Miami Marlins had their game against the New York Mets rained out so they will play a doubleheader on Wednesday. It is going to be big seeing what they do as they now only trail the Cubs by 0.5 games for the final Wild Card spot.

The Cincinnati Reds also won so they are only 1.5 games back. To say this was a very bad loss for the Cubs would be an understatement. Only time will tell how much it ends up costing them if at all. They need some help now. A reminder to everyone is that they don’t have the tiebreaker over Miami.

The Cubs will try to right the wrong on Wednesday night when they take on the Braves again. They need their biggest effort of the season against this Braves team that came all the way back on Tuesday.

Suzuki is a great player and should be proud of his season with the Cubs but he really made a mistake here. Hopefully, for Cubs fans’ sake, he and the Cubs will be able to bounce back in a big way in the final five games of the season.
