Prominent QB guru offers to help Chicago Bears with Justin Fields
Chicago Bears starting quarterback Justin Fields is on a downward trend as he is two games into his third season in the NFL and it would appear that the quarterback clock will reset for the Bears after this off-season.
Unlike his tape against the Green Bay Packers, there were throws that Fields made on Sunday that showed flashes of him being something special.
The issue is that throws from Fields are the exception to what he is as a passing quarterback and not the expectation. The fans will point to that throw and say “This is why Fields is the franchise quarterback for the Bears”.
There is no question that was a great throw from Fields but they are few and far between. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
That is why it is glaring that Fields has routinely missed open reads on a consistent basis.
Beyond the consistent missing of opportunities down the field, Fields and his mechanics seemed to have reverted back to his rookie season. Fields is holding the ball longer than he’s ever had before at the NFL level and looks panicked in the pocket.
Yes, the offensive line around Fields has been bad but there are multiple mistakes happening each game that are the result of the quarterback not being where he needs to be in his third season in the NFL. That would be the reason why many Bears fans are waking up on Monday with the realization that Fields may not be the answer at quarterback.
While it would be unfair to make a final determination on Fields’ status with the Bears before the end of the season, the early returns are not encouraging. Perhaps, the Bears want to take Tim Jenkins up on his offer.
Jenkins’ offer to the Bears raises a valid question, is Luke Getsy only in his position because he had the privilege of coaching Aaron Rodgers with the Green Bay Packers?
Getsy’s scheme at the beginning of the 2022 season was broken and he does deserve credit for being willing to admit that in-season and switch to a scheme similar to what the Baltimore Ravens run and that produced immediate results.
That is why it is mind-boggling that rather than add a passing element to what the Bears had success in doing with Fields last season, Getsy chose to abandon that scheme entirely and revert back to one that Fields has proven he can not run at this point in his NFL career.
In closing, to quote John Fox, “it’s all a problem”.
