Chicago Bears: Faith in Justin Fields should be completely shaken
The Chicago Bears were demolished in Week 1 of the NFL season as the Green Bay Packers came to Soldier Field and dominated them. It was a tough loss for a team trying to take steps forward, especially quarterback Justin Fields.
That meant that this game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road was even more significant for them coming into Week 2. They needed a win so badly because 0-2 teams very rarely come back and make it to the playoffs.
Well, things went from bad to worse against these Buccaneers. They had a lead in the game which is the only improvement from the week prior. The Bears lost the game by a final score of 27-17. In a game where the Bears were looking for big things from their quarterback, they got nothing.
Justin Fields went 16/29 with one touchdown pass and two interceptions. He also rushed for three yards on four carries but had a touchdown. It is nice that he ran one into the endzone but his stats were overall horrible and that can’t be ignored.
The Chicago Bears should not have so much faith in Justin Fields anymore.
When you watched the game, it was clear that his level of play matched his stats. He misses throws, makes bad reads, and can’t stop holding onto the football for too long. These are things that should be coachable but the Bears refuse to develop a quarterback the right way.
It was fair to worry about Fields at times last season but it is obvious now. The confidence in his future should be very much in doubt now. He hasn’t taken the steps that others in the league have. The coaching staff or weapon excuse have been valid but others deal with those issues too.
Fields is the only one that doesn’t even get a little bit better on his own. In fact, he looks worse this year and things aren’t nearly as bad on paper in terms of roster construction. It is fair to think about waiting out the season but he is not the quarterback of the future at this moment in time.
If he doesn’t have a strong finish to this season, he needs to go somewhere else. Another team might be able to save him but the Bears are not that organization. With the Kansas City Chiefs next on the schedule, things are not looking great for the Chicago Bears right now.
