Chicago Bears News: Kyler Gordon to the IR, Luke Getsy speaks, and more
Typically, the Thursday of a game week for NFL teams is when the page has fully been turned from the previous game and onto their opponent for the upcoming weekend.
That hasn’t been the case for the Chicago Bears this week as their miserable showing against the Green Bay Packers has left everyone with nothing but questions about what went wrong.
The Bears, however, did provide clarity on the status of nickleback Kyler Gordon.
Chicago Bears place Kyle Gordon on Short-Term IR
Gordon has been placed on short-term IR with a hand injury.
The Bears’ second-year cornerback will now miss the next four games and be eligible to return in the team’s first game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings in October.
While the Bears did not provide any more information in regard to the hand injury that Gordon suffered, the belief is that he did suffer a fracture. Surgery has not been ruled out for Gordon and if that takes place, then the timeline for a return would be approximately 6-8 weeks.
Cornerback Greg Stroman Jr. has been elevated from the practice squad to take Gordon’s place on the active roster.
Josh Blackwell would be the next man up at the nickleback position for the Bears. Blackwell, however, has been dealing with a hamstring injury and was limited in practice on Wednesday.
Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy speaks
Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy spoke at his weekly press conference with reporters and there was an emphasis in regard to the need to get primary wide receiver D.J. Moore more involved in the team’s offense.
As was the case with head coach Matt Eberflus and quarterback Justin Fields earlier this week, the Bears seem to be falling back on the idea that blocking along the edges needs to be better.
While there is no question that is the case, the Bears’ offensive game plan has to be better. The offense that the Bears tried last Sunday is the same offense that was broken during the first five games of the 2022 season. That is negligent coaching to revert back to that gameplan given the success that the Bears had during the middle portion of last season with having Fields on the move more consistently.
Dan Hampton sounds off on Eddie Jackson
1985 Chicago Bears legend and NFL Hall of Famer Dan Hampton is now a member of WGN radio’s post-game show for Bears’ games and Hampton sounded off on the efforts of safety Eddie Jackson:
"“Eddie Jackson is playing like a clown,” Hampton said. “He’s not tackling and is blowing coverages in the endzone. [Chase] Claypool is a disgrace. He doesn’t block. Tremaine Edmunds, our big shot, $80 million linebacker jumps inside on that screen there to [Aaron] Jones and they run it right up our address for a touchdown.”-NBC Sports Chicago"
Outside of rookie running back Roschon Johnson, there was not a Bears player that had good tape last Sunday against the Packers. That would be the reason why, one game into the season, the season already appears to be at a crossroads for the Bears.
If the Bears come out on Sunday and show a similar effort against the Buccaneers, criticisms like the one that Hampton will be a weekly tradition.
